Suspicions and speculations have been rife for well over a year at this point, with political figures dropping hints that have thus far yet to materialise. Regardless, here’s a chronological record of the rumoured GE 14 date or possible timeframe beyond CNY, compiled from news reports, in the hope that you’ll find it easier to Guess the Date and win our contest!
Soon After CNY
Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamid mentioned this possible timeframe when he officiated the Teoh Fu Kiong Temple in Hutan Melintang, Bagan Datuk, Perak, back in November 2017. Although he didn’t give a more concrete timeframe, political analysts believe he may be referring to a period between March and April, or a period that coincides with school holidays between 16th March and 24th March (give or take a day depending on the states’ weekends).
Ramadhan, a month-long period of fasting for Muslims, will fall on 15th May 2018, with Hari Raya Aidilfitri one month later, on 14th June 2018. As both are month-long celebrations, it is unlikely that GE 14 will be held between mid-May to mid-July. The current government’s mandate is set to expire on 24th June 2018, after which the next elections must be held within 60 days, putting the last possible date at 24th August 2018. Extending the date beyond Ramadhan and Aidilfitri would mean that political parties have little more than one month to prepare and campaign for votes.
Fresh after CNY, deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi hinted that “a big occasion” will occur before Hari Raya Aidilfitri. The deputy Prime Minister made no definite statements on what that “occasion” will be, but he said that “we will have three festivals…Chinese New Year has just passed…but before we celebrate Hari Raya Aidilfitri, we will have one big celebration”. For reference, Hari Raya Aidilfitri will fall on 14th June 2018.
Before 14th July
On 2nd February 2018, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak announced something slightly different from his deputy: that there will be two ‘raya’ occasions this year before haj pilgrims are scheduled to leave for Mecca on 14 July 2018. According to him, by 14th July, “two occasions would have passed, one being Hari Raya Aidilfitri and the other being ‘the other raya’. The very next day, the Prime Minister proceeded to launch a website that details Barisan Nasional candidates, the party’s election manifesto, interviews, infographics, analyses, and electoral information called TheRakyat.com.
Of course, there were many rumours of the elusive GE 14 date spanning from mid-2017, but none of them have come true yet. Anticipation is building up for GE 14, now more than ever. Are you ready to Guess the Date?
